Clinical significance of MS


In the clinical laboratories for the diagnosis of disease, disease screening and metabolic disorders, monitoring of the drug therapy, identifying the drug poisoning and toxicity and regulation of the advanced biomarkers the mass spectrometry technology have been used. By the application of the mass spectrometry technique the therapeutic regulation of immunosuppressant drugs is well established. For the evaluation of the steroidal hormones for the endocrine disorders and vitamin D, the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry is the best technique in the clinical laboratories. The tandem mass spectrometry is used for the measurement of the thyroid hormones which have overcome the issue with immunoassays. For the screening of toxicology and quantification of toxic drug the method that is preferred is triple quadrupole MS/MS.  Electrospray, tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) is used for laboratory testing technology for new-born and prenatal screening for many errors of metabolism.  Electrospray tandem mass spectrometry new born screening technology is continuously expanding due to its advantage in screening infants for many uncommon inborn diseases.  The other bright significance of MS is the estimation of endogenous metabolites as new disease biomarkers that is acceptable to clinical application and discovery of metabolite characterization
MS technique have a wide variety of application in the clinical field and still there are provocation that include online extraction, sample preparation, throughput, laboratory information system interfacing, automation, inter-instruments standardization and harmonization and FDA regulation.
