Now, these  techniques for ionization  are not generally used in modern mass spectrometry except EI for environmental work using GC-MS.   Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization (APCI), electrospray ionization (ESI), Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization (MALDI) are Modern Ionization techniques in mass spectrometry. APCI forms a protonated molecule and is completely compatible with  Liquid Chromatography  (LC) and so it is more preferred over EI methods.
